Rather than use the Yahoo api direct with Flex. A more flexible approach is to use the Modest maps library. I have a bunch of examples at:

Pulling tiles from Yahoo and then adding Flex components is easy. Doesn’t lock you into their api. I have a ski map mash up here:

which gives you an idea of the possibilities.
